Production, MRP and quality: coordinate exceptions before changing the plan

Connect engineering, procurement, inventory and the shop floor to explain shortages, assemble alternatives and track approved decisions.

Start with a decision that crosses departments

An order cannot ship because material is missing. Procurement has a supplier promise, inventory shows a blocked lot, engineering knows an alternative and the planner needs to decide. The agent’s role is to gather this evidence, identify stale information and coordinate next tasks with owners and deadlines.

Choose one product family and one exception queue for the first pilot. Deployment connects available sources through APIs, connectors or custom integration. It does not assume native coverage of every ERP, MES or industrial machine. The first outcome can be a reliable decision package before enabling order changes.

Establish a planning data contract

Identify order, item, bill-of-materials revision, unit, quantity, need date, work center and the source of every value. Separate physical from available inventory, promised from confirmed receipts and nominal from released capacity. Record query time and revision validity.

Oracle MRP documentation links useful planning to master-schedule, bill-of-materials, inventory and lead-time quality. Use that dependency to define pilot input checks; one vendor’s parameters are not universal factory targets. If the structure differs from the engineering-approved revision, raise an exception before recommending purchases.

Check requirements with a reproducible example

Simplified synthetic example: producing 100 assemblies requires two B parts per assembly, giving a gross requirement of 200 parts. There are 70 available and 40 with confirmed receipt before consumption. Net requirement is 200 − 70 − 40 = 90 parts. With a minimum purchase lot of 50 and multiples of 50, a configured rounding rule would suggest 100 parts.

This example excludes scrap, safety stock, other reservations and multilevel structures. Those factors belong in the real planning engine. If the 40 parts arrive after the need date, they do not resolve that date’s shortage. The agent can explain the calculation and cause, while ERP/MRP retains deterministic rules and authoritative records. Dates also depend on working calendars and inspection time.

Available material does not guarantee capacity

Check machines, tools, qualified operators, setup, maintenance, shifts and permitted sequences. A plan can have every component and still be infeasible. Record mandatory constraints separately from preferences: safety and qualifications must not be traded for less delay.

The agent organizes scenarios for the planner: wait for the supplier, transfer released material, use an already approved alternative or reschedule an order. Each scenario should show assumptions, dependencies, lead time and sourced cost estimates. A model-suggested substitution is not engineering approval. Deployment may integrate an existing optimizer; generated text does not prove finite-capacity feasibility.

From nonconformity to verified action

Link a quality incident to lot, order, revision, measurement and original evidence. The agent can consolidate reports and prepare investigation questions. A cause remains a hypothesis until verified; a convincing summary does not establish root cause.

Separate immediate containment, item correction and recurrence prevention. Assign an owner, deadline and closure evidence to each action. Lot release, specification changes and machine-parameter changes require factory technical controls. Track recurrence after the action: closing a system task does not demonstrate process improvement.

Use research to inform design, not promise gains

Sprock and colleagues discuss integrating heterogeneous enterprise data to support dynamic scheduling under production disruption. The NIST-published abstract presents challenges, test use cases and qualities of good solutions. It is not a Zild benchmark or proof of a percentage cost reduction.

The practical application here is to establish sources, identifiers and constraints before delegating decisions. Value comes from combining reliable data, planning models, accountable people and action follow-up. AI helps connect those parts; local evaluation checks whether the combination works in your operation.

Evaluate in parallel before changing orders

Reserve cases not used for instruction tuning: late supplier, blocked lot, revised BOM, unavailable machine, urgent order and conflicting information. Run read-only and compare the agent’s proposed queue with accountable owners’ analysis at the same cutoff time.

Measure time to approved decision, correctly prioritized exceptions, infeasible recommendations, rework, plan changes and cost per resolved exception. Record volume, product mix and resource availability to avoid attributing demand-driven improvements to the agent. If a mandatory constraint is violated, suspend automatic execution and investigate before expanding.

Connect the factory to management routines

In Zild, the design can combine Admin for agents, access and connectors, Chat for team queries and Flow for tasks and follow-up. Integration must confirm which reads and writes each system permits. Field teams, maintenance and contractors receive only information needed for authorized work.

For the assessment, gather anonymized orders, BOMs, inventory positions, a calendar and three already-resolved real exceptions. Define a correct decision, who may approve and what happens when a source is unavailable. The pilot then starts with a verifiable process and can grow by product family, site and team.
